A few years ago I taught photography classes, and it was one of the parts of my work I loved most. Watching someone go from “my camera is always on auto” to “wait, I made this photo on purpose” never gets old. So I’m bringing it back with a photography course in Haarlem, taught in English or Spanish.
A photography course in Haarlem in English (or Spanish)
Most photography courses in Haarlem are taught in Dutch. If you’re an expat, or you just feel more comfortable learning in English or Spanish, it’s hard to find something that fits. I’ve lived abroad for years myself, so I know how nice it is to learn something new without translating in your head at the same time.
Who this course is for
This course is for complete beginners. You don’t need any experience, just curiosity and a camera. It’s for you if:
- You bought a camera and never took it off auto mode
- You want better photos of your family, your trips or your everyday life
- You feel lost with words like aperture, ISO or white balance
- You’d like to learn in a small, relaxed group, not a big classroom
Any camera works, whether it’s Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fujifilm or another brand. I teach the concepts so you can apply them to whatever you have, and we’ll also talk about how to use what you learn with your phone.
What you’ll learn
The course has 3 sessions of 3 hours each. Every session combines theory with practice outside, walking around Haarlem with your camera.
Session 1: Light, your camera and exposure
How light becomes a photo, getting to know your camera, and the exposure triangle: aperture, shutter speed and ISO. You’ll leave shooting in manual (or semi-manual) mode.
Session 2: Focus, lenses and light
How to get sharp photos, which focus mode to use and when, what focal length does to an image, and how to read and use light: hard and soft light, direction, time of day and white balance.
Session 3: Composition and editing
How to build a strong image: simplifying, negative space, rule of thirds, lines, color, angles, and when to break the rules. Then a simple editing workflow with Lightroom or Snapseed, so your photos look the way you imagined.
After each session you get a small practice assignment, so what you learn actually sticks.
