A few days ago, my 9-year-old daughter asked if she could bake a cake all by herself, without my help. I confess I hesitated a little, but I decided to let her. I gave her the recipe, kept one eye on how she was getting on, and, of course, grabbed my camera.
What is a “day in the life” photo session?
A day in the life session is documentary family photography at its most honest. There are no poses and no perfect outfits. I simply join you for a few hours of your normal life: baking, playing, reading on the sofa, getting messy in the kitchen. The result is a story of who you are right now, the kind of photos you’ll treasure in twenty years.
That’s exactly what these images of my daughter are: flour on the table, concentration on her face, and pure pride when the cake came out of the oven.
Why I love documenting everyday moments
The most precious moments are often the ones we don’t think to photograph. The ordinary afternoons, the small rituals, the way your children grow a little more independent every day. A day in the life session captures those moments before they change.
Teach them to fish (or to bake the cake)
Watching her, the first thing that popped into my head was that famous phrase: “Give a person a fish, or teach them how to fish.” And I feel the same way with the women entrepreneurs I work with. I always choose to teach rather than do it for you, because when you’re building a business, you don’t always have the budget to pay someone for what you don’t know how to do.
If your business grows one day, great! Then you can delegate, knowing exactly what you expect. In the meantime, learning to fish, or to bake the cake yourself, gives you control of your brand.
