A few days ago, my 9-year-old daughter asked me to bake a cake all by herself, without my help. I confess I hesitated a little, but I decided to let her after giving her the recipe and keeping one eye on how she was getting on with the step-by-step process.
The first thing that popped into my head was that famous phrase: ‘give a person a fish or teach them how to fish.’ And I feel a bit the same way with fellow women entrepreneurs. I always choose to teach you rather than do it myself, because when you’re building a business, you don’t always have the budget to pay someone to do what you don’t know how to do or what you don’t love.
If your business scales one day, great! Then you can delegate and pay someone, knowing exactly what you expect from them. In the meantime, you have no choice but to learn how to fish (or how to bake the cake yourself) so you can have control of your brand.
Do you feel the same way? Do you prefer to learn so you don’t depend on anyone, or do you have a different philosophy?
