The best spots for family photos in Haarlem (autumn edition)

Autumn might be my favourite season for family photos in Haarlem. The light is soft and golden, the trees turn copper and amber, and everyone looks cosy in knitwear. It is also the season when many families think about photos for the holidays, or simply want to capture how little the kids still are.

One of the first questions I get when planning a family photoshoot in Haarlem is: where should we go? So here are my favourite family photoshoot locations in and around Haarlem for autumn, from leafy parks to quiet canals, plus a few tips to make the most of the season.

1. Haarlemmerhout: the classic autumn forest in the city

The Haarlemmerhout is one of the oldest city parks in the Netherlands, and in autumn it is pure magic. Tall old trees, winding paths and a carpet of leaves make it perfect for walking, running and leaf-throwing photos. It feels like a forest, but it is only minutes from the centre.
Best for: families with energetic kids who need space to move.

2. Frederikspark and Paviljoen Welgelegen: open lawns with a classic backdrop

Just across from the Haarlemmerhout, the Frederikspark offers wide lawns, big trees and the elegant Paviljoen Welgelegen in the background. The open space lets the low autumn sun come through beautifully, especially late in the afternoon.

Best for: relaxed picnic-style photos and families with babies or toddlers.

3. Along the Spaarne: water, bridges and Molen De Adriaan

The banks of the Spaarne give you that typical Dutch feel: old facades, boats, bridges and the iconic windmill De Adriaan. Around golden hour the light reflects on the water and everything turns warm. It is a lovely choice if you want your photos to say this is our city.

Best for: families who want Haarlem to be part of the story.

4. The quiet streets of the historic centre

Narrow streets, brick houses, green doors and cosy corners. Early in the morning or on a weekday, the streets around the Grote Kerk are calm and full of character. The buildings also give a bit of shelter on a windy autumn day.

Best for: a city-walk session with a coffee or hot chocolate stop.

5. Your own home: the cosiest option of all

When the days get shorter and colder, home is one of the best places for family photos. Reading books on the sofa, baking together, pillow fights, sleepy cuddles: these are the moments your kids will love to look back on. And no one needs to worry about rain.

Best for: babies, toddlers and families who want real, everyday moments. More about it on my family photography page.

6. Elswout and the dunes: nature just outside Haarlem

If you dream of wild autumn nature, the estate of Elswout and the dunes of the Kennemerland national park are just outside the city. Think old trees, ponds, sandy paths and big skies. These are protected nature areas, so professional photoshoots need permission from the park managers. Planning a few weeks ahead is key.

Best for: nature-loving families who want a true outdoor adventure.

When is the best time for family photos in Haarlem?

  • Peak colours: usually from mid-October to early November in Haarlem. After a storm the leaves can drop fast, so earlier is safer.
  • Golden hour: the hour before sunset gives the softest, warmest light. Remember that the clocks go back at the end of October, and in November the sun sets well before 17:30. After school can be tight, so weekends often work best.
  • Mornings: a great alternative for little ones who are at their happiest early in the day.

A few tips for your autumn session

  • Dress in warm, soft tones. Rust, camel, olive, cream and denim look beautiful with autumn leaves. Avoid big logos and neon colours.
  • Layer up. A cosy coat or knitted jumper looks lovely in photos and keeps everyone warm and happy.
  • Bring snacks and a favourite toy. A short break works wonders for small children.
  • Don’t worry about the weather. Light drizzle and cloudy skies give soft, flattering light. If it pours, we reschedule or move the session to your home.
